HISTORY
History is nothing but the activity of man pursuing his aims. On the other hand, though men make their history, they do not make it just as they please; they do not make it under circumstances chosen by them, but under circumstances directly encountered, given and transmitted from the past. It is the interaction of these objective circumstances with the subjective will of men that makes for progress.
History is on the side of progress, without the implication that progress is tantamount to prosperity.
